As I look forward the the upcoming A Cappella Innovations taking place April 4-6 I can't help but reflect on the last event that took place in December. This coming event will be the second in the series, and I am looking forward to it.
The last event took place in the unique "Egg" theater. It's a very interesting structure. The theaters are actually inside the "Egg". Two of them, one larger and one smaller.

It was through an introduction to Clare Bronfman by Mike Baker that I was brought in for this event. Mike and I had met at SoJam in North Carolina that year. When Mike told me about this event I was interested, so conversations with Clare led to me being brought up to take photos, and help with the video team if they needed anything. Being part of the video team meant an unique opportunity to work with Mark Vicente and his video team up in Albany.

I used to offer video services, but when I saw the way these guys got stuff done, I was very impressed.

The event itself is incredible. College a cappella groups from around the north eastern United States are invited to come and take workshops in a variety of areas from performance and arranging, to vocal percussion and even improv. I found myself running around a lot, but did get a chance to sit in on a bit of the workshops taught by Lauren Salzman and Allison Mack. Everyone in there seemed to be having a great time as these two kept energy high throughout.

I also sat in for awhile with the vocal percussion workshop, taught by Mike Baker of Simply Human, and Wes Carroll of The House Jacks.

The college performances were also excellent. They ran throughout the day. There were no requirements to perform, every group who was willing was given the opportunity to perform.

The college groups were judged by a panel of professionals from a variety of backgrounds. Singers, dancers, actors, and music industry executives, including Kristin Kruek from Smallville.

And A Cappella promoter Kurt Walker with artist BT.
